In this video, I talk about spinal stenosis. Focusing on the lumbar spine, I discuss the causes and symptoms of spinal stenosis, also know as lumbar canal stenosis. Spinal stenosis essentially means narrowing of the spaces where the spinal nerves are. Most commonly it is due to spinal degeneration, or "wear and tear." Less commonly it can be due to trauma, infection or some types of tumours. Symptoms of spinal stenosis include back pain, sciatica (shooting pains in the legs), claudication (pain in the calves or hamstrings with walking), numbness and tingling in the legs, difficulty walking, and rarely problems with bowel and bladder function. CT or MRI reliably shows the cause of spinal stenosis and its severity.
