pectineus
A flat, quadrangular muscle, situated at the anterior part of the upper and medial aspect of the thigh. It is the most anterior adductor of the hip. It arises from the pectineal line of the pubis (pecten pubis) and to a slight extent from the surface of bone in front of it, between the iliopectineal eminence and pubic tubercle, to be inserted into the pectineal line of the femur which leads from the lesser trochanter to the linea aspera. (Function) • Flexion of the hip. • Adduction of the thigh. (Blood supply) • Superficial part by medial circumflex femoral artery. • Deep part by the anterior branch of obturator artery. (Innervation) • Femoral nerve (L2 and L3). • For some people, also accessory obturator nerve (a branch of the obturator nerve). Cf. psoas major
