The rain pounded mercilessly against Emma's windshield as she navigated the dark backroads toward home. Twelve hours into what should have been an eight-hour shift at County General had left her drained, her scrubs still bearing the evidence of a particularly difficult trauma case. All she wanted was a hot shower and her bed. Then she saw him – a small figure stumbling along the roadside, drenched and disoriented. A child, alone in the storm, bleeding. Emma slammed on the brakes, her nurse's instincts overriding every warning bell about stopping on deserted roads at night. She threw the car into park and grabbed her emergency medical kit from the trunk. The boy couldn't have been more than seven years old, dark hair plastered to his deathly pale face, his expensive clothes torn and muddied. Most alarming was the blood seeping through his shirt. "Hey there," Emma called softly, approaching slowly with her hands visible. "I'm a nurse. Can I help you?" The child's head snapped up, his eyes wide with terror, ready to bolt despite his obvious injuries. Emma recognized the look – she'd seen it in abused children brought into the ER, that haunted wariness that broke her heart every time. "I'm not going to hurt you," she promised, kneeling in the mud to appear less threatening, rain soaking through her already damp scrubs. "You're bleeding. Will you let me help?" The boy swayed on his feet, his eyes struggling to focus. Shock, Emma diagnosed immediately. He needed medical attention fast. As if making the decision for them both, his knees buckled. Emma lunged forward, catching him before he hit the ground. His body burned with fever against her chest, yet he shivered violently. The front of his designer shirt was soaked with blood. Emma's training kicked in as she carried him to her car, laying him across the backseat. Under the dome light, she cut away his shirt to reveal a jagged knife wound across his ribs – not deep enough to be life-threatening but serious enough to require immediate care.
