(IN RUSSIAN is below) Toolse (Tolsburg) Castle (Estonia)— built in 1471 by the Teutonic Knights, it was their northernmost fortress on the Baltic Sea coast. Its mission was to protect trade routes and ships from pirates in the Gulf of Finland. Over the centuries, it faced wars, invasions, and decay, passing through Teutonic, Muscovite, and Swedish hands. Today, the picturesque seaside ruins of Toolse are the only surviving coastal Teutonic castle — a haunting reminder of medieval power and history. But According to local legend, in the 17th century Tolsburg Castle became a haven for sea pirates. The rumors had some truth: in 1696, the merchant ship St. Johannes, sailing from Narva to Stockholm, ran aground near the island of Uhtu, about 10 km from Toolse. Led by Olaf Lunde, the owner of Tolsburg Castle, locals looted the stranded ship. What happened to the crew and the merchant Makuta Pauxson remains unknown. Another tale tells of a German knight nicknamed “The Wolf of Toolse”, feared for his cruelty. He allegedly lured ships ashore with false lights and plundered them with his men. Thus, the castle built to defend against pirates eventually became their refuge. After the Great Northern War, Tolsburg fell into ruin and was never rebuilt.
