CBM and the Ophthalmology National Unit (UNO) work on the Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) programme aiming to reduce childhood blindness through training neonatal care personnel, conducting weekly screenings at newborn wards and facilitating treatments and surgeries. Also reviewing screening photographs, educating parents, and advocating for regulatory approval. The retina is not fully developed until around the calculated date of birth. Babies born before the 31st week of pregnancy, who weigh less than 1,500 grams at birth, and those requiring artificial respiration, are in a greater risk. In a worst-case situation, retinopathy in the newborn can lead to a detachment of the retina and progress to blindness. From January 2022 to April 2024, 2,551 screenings were performed for newborns at 12 hospitals nationwide.
