He was a hometown hero who returned to Canada to become one of the league’s more prolific scorers and clutch performers – and now he is a go-to guard among the league’s all-time greats. Today, the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC) named Carl English to the 10th Anniversary All Time Team, comprised of the 10 greatest players in league history. Further players will be announced on the league homepage (nblcanada.ca) and social media channels through from April 14. “When NBL Canada launched a franchise in his home province (Newfoundland), he vowed to come back and play for his hometown fans, those who supported his dreams of playing international basketball. Watching that, it was something special,” said Audley Stephenson, NBLC Vice-president of Basketball Operations. “On the court, he was dominant, a guy who was never afraid of the big shot or the big moment – and he delivered time and time again. He was a special player across the board.” Playing for the St. John’s Edge (2017-20), English returned to Canada after a storied international career to be named NBLC MVP and Canadian of the Year in his first season (2017). The 6-foot-4-inch shooting guard set the league’s single-game scoring record of 58 in a 127-117 win over the KW Titans in 2018. The NBLC 10th Anniversary All-Time Team was selected by a 13-person committee of former league personnel, coaches, and front office staff. Voters selected players based on numerous factors, including impact on league, on-court play, longevity, representative of league values on and off the court, influence, and community involvement.
