Written in the period between 1934 and 1941 by Mayama Seika, Genroku Chūshingura is a masterpiece of the XX century genre of kabuki known as shin ("new") kabuki. In this video, we cover the first play in the cycle, Edo-jō no Ninjō ("The Attack in Edo Castle"), premiered in January 1935, at the Tokyo Gekijō, with a cast led by Ichikawa Sadanji II. If the feedback for this video is positive, I will continue to cover other plays in the cycle, continuing with Saigo no Daihyōjō ("The Last Great Council"), first performed in April 1935. Special thanks to Paul Griffith for his detailed commentary of this play, and to Régis Allègre for his exhaustive documentation of kabuki on the website kabuki21, as well as the Patreon members who, as always, make these videos possible: C.
