The train journey is usually made for itself rather than “to get somewhere”. It is as if the journey actually begins on the train. Train people form groups. Food car, cigarette break friendships, drinkers, people who read books, watch movies, do nothing find each other. Last fall, our Hurriyet Train journey took a month. We traveled all over Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia, Aegean and Marmara on the rails. I always got off at stations I didn't know, I got involved in markets I didn't know.
