Bose was born in Kolkata, India. He had a great interest in science and mathematics since his childhood. His teacher believed that he had the potential to become a great mathematician - the equal of Pierre Simon Laplace. Bose taught at the University of Dhaka. While he was explaining Planck's radiation law to his students, he got restless as he could not explain it clearly. Bose derived this law in his own way - without any reference to classical physics. He had developed new statistics. Bose sent his work to Max Planck in Germany. But, it was rejected. He later wrote to Albert Einstein himself. Einstein was so impressed by Bose's work that he translated it into German and submitted it on Bose's behalf in a top journal of Physics. Einstein later extended Bose's idea to atoms and formulated the famous Bose Einstein Statistics. The Bose-Einstein statistics have many applications in Physics. Bose was elected as a member of the Royal Society of London in 1958. The greatest honor was when a class of particles was named after him - the Bosons. Bosons are the particles having integral spin. They are one of the two classes of particles in the standard model of physics, the other being Fermions. There are 5 Bosons in the standard model - gluon, W Boson, Z Boson, Photon, and the Higgs Boson or the God particle. These particles are named after him not because he theorized or discovered them, but because they obey the statistics given by Bose. These particles were theorized and discovered by different scientists over the years. Although Bose was nominated several times for the Nobel Prize, he was rejected as the Nobel committee did not see his work worthy of the Prize. But, today his work speaks for itself.
