A pioneer in telemedicine, he is the reference for this discipline within the African Union. It all began at the end of his training. When he was practising medicine, he treated patients from all over the world, and even began to give remote consultations. One day, he learned the real name of this practice: telemedicine. For him, it's a branch in its own right that can't be dissociated from medicine. Telemedicine is a medical practice that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) to provide healthcare at a distance. It enables healthcare professionals to communicate with their patients or other healthcare professionals using tools such as videoconferencing, instant messaging, mobile applications and online platforms. According to Dr Gnoumou: ‘Telemedicine is remote diagnosis, treatment and expertise. The patient is not physically in front of the doctor, but uses very simple means such as the telephone, which can be very sophisticated to the point of collecting blood tests, collecting images, collecting the functioning of organs and transmitting them, somewhere, to the doctor’.
