CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A woman battling a rare disease is giving hope and support to other patients battling the same disease by putting together kits with items to help them through the difficult symptoms. Nicole Stout has chiari malformation and joined Dr. Bill Tobler from Mayfield Brain and Spine and Liz Bonis is preparation for Sunday's "What's Happening In Health Show." "Chiari malformation is essentially a blockage that occurs where the brain turns into the spine at the base of the skull," Dr. Tobler said. "There's a defect in the cerebellum which is the back part of the brain and that sort of sticks into the opening and plugs it. The brain floats in spinal fluid and blocks. So it's basically blocking a drain. And that fluid builds up, causes headaches and causes of lot of other symptoms." Nicole has had several procedure, including major surgery, to ease the symptoms. There is no cure for chiari malformation. She now puts together "chiari kits" to help other people battling the disease. The kits include everything a patient might need, including neck pillows and cheer up cards. "When I went through my surgery, I had an awful amount of support and it was one of the hardest things I've been through," Stout said. "Having a soft blanket and having some these times made a huge difference during my recovery at the hospital and coming home. And so we include the cards and I give them my phone number in case they have questions or just need support. You know, when somebody goes through something you've been through and you can relate to that, it gives you hope."
