Join Nicholas de Mattos for a discussion on Thomas Traherne. And hear Nicholas' personal reflections on the impact of Traherne. 'Once I remember (I think I was about 4 year old when) I thus reasoned with myself, sitting in a little obscure room in my father's poor house: if there be a God, certainly He must be infinite in goodness (and that I was prompted to by a real whispering instinct of nature). And if He be infinite in goodness, and a perfect being in wisdom and love, certainly He must do most glorious things and give us infinite riches; how comes it to pass therefore that I am so poor? Of so scanty and narrow a fortune, enjoying few and obscure comforts? I thought I could not believe Him a God to me unless all His power were employed to glorify me. I knew not then my soul and body; nor did I think of the heavens and the earth, the rivers and the stars, the sun or the seas; all those were lost and absent from me. But when I found them made out of nothing for me, then I had a God indeed whom I could praise and rejoice in.' Traherne, at this early age, seems to have passed through a minute alteration of perception. '....glorify me...' shouldn't be taken at its face value as some egotistical standpoint but more that 'I should be part of his glory'. When he awakens to the glory around him, which he perceives as though it had arisen out of nothing and he himself is the recipient of it, he unifies with it and God. His phraseology is significant: 'I had a God...' He and God are the same. Welcome to 'Philosophy Live'. Each Friday during the term a tutor from the Practical Philosophy course will present a philosophic gem which we hope will be of interest. Each session will be around 10-15 minutes long. Whether you have attended philosophy classes or not, all are welcome. The live sessions are recorded and can be watched at any time on the School of Philosophy and Economic Science’s Facebook page and here on YouTube. The views expressed in these live videos are the personal view of the tutors rather than the School of Philosophy and Economic Science. The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation. Enjoyed this video?
