She Joined A 1968 Street Riot In Harlem

The speaker is Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons. I interviewed her in 1989 as part of my PBS television series on the 1960s. She is a professor of religion at the University of Florida. I liked this interview because she gives a sense of the beautiful idealistic innocence of those who wanted to improve civil rights, especially those who participated in the famous Mississippi Freedom Summer. As part of the Freedom Summer, Simmons helped build freedom schools and libraries in black communities in Mississippi. And here we are again, with the murder of George Floyd, dealing with street protests to demand equal rights in treatment from the police and in jobs etc.
