Survived AI-171 Crash, Now Battling Life: Vishwas Details Trauma, No Income, And A Long Wait

Exclusive interview with 39-year-old Leicester-based Indian, Vishwashkumar Ramesh - lone survivor of the Air India flight AI 171 (Ahmedabad–London Gatwick) crash. Speaking to TOI, four-and-a-half months after the June 12 crash Vishwashkumar Ramesh talks about his fight to rebuild his life. He was in seat 11A by the emergency exit and somehow walked out of a burning wreck that killed 241 of the 242 people on board. Today, he lives with severe physical pain, limited mobility, no income, and deep trauma. “Mentally I have completely broken down,” he tells us from Leicester. After brief treatment in India, Vishwash returned to the UK on Sept 15, but says he is yet to receive NHS psychiatric support. He can’t drive, struggles to walk and mostly stays indoors. The family fishing business in Diu, which he ran with his brother, has collapsed. His wife’s UK universal credit was stopped after she had to travel to India for two months post-crash. Community leader Sanjiv Patel and crisis adviser Radd Seiger, who are helping the family, say Air India and UK authorities have not stepped up with tailored, timely assistance. Air India says it is “deeply conscious” of its responsibility and that Tata Group leaders have met families, adding that the offer to meet Vishwash’s representatives is still open.
