Recorded on 23/06/23. In this video, I film Optare Solo 462 (FE02 KFL) on the route 90 towards Ripley. My favourite moments are listed below: 0:22 - Fast section begins 1:13 - Hill climb 2:47 - Downhill acceleration 4:09 - Slipping belt 462 is an extremely special vehicle, as it is the only surviving Allison AT545 Solo left in the entirety of Wellglade's operations. It has already had an impressive 21 year tenure and it continues to power on to this day. 462 entered service in 2002, branded for The Allestree. Between 2002 and 2007, 462 sported a red and yellow colour scheme. In 2007, the Allestree's branding was switched to grey. Therefore, 462 was repainted to accommodate this change. In 2012, new blue Optare Solo SRs replaced the 02-plated Solos on The Allestree. This resulted in 462, along with several other sister vehicles, becoming Trent Barton spares. 462 was, in fact, the first Optare Solo to re-enter service in the new dark red spare livery (the same one it retains to this day). Ten years ago, this type of Optare Solo was commonplace on route 90. Prior to 2012, 90 was an unbranded service and any of the Sutton depot spares could appear on the route. The spare pool consisted of Optare Excels, Optare Solos and Dennis Dart Plaxton Pointers. However, in 2012, the service became known as The Ninety. It used three branded vehicles for the first (and only) time in its history. 445 (FE02 KDK), 447 (FE02 KDO), and 449 (FE02 KDV) were the vehicles selected for the service. The branding of the Solos was similar to the brown livery used on The Nines. Two of the branded Solos remained on the service until early 2017, when new Enviro 200 MMCs were introduced on The Nines. As The Ninety's branding was now inconsistent with the bright orange branding of The Nines, the service became unbranded again. Therefore, 447 and 449 were withdrawn. Until recently, route 90 predominantly used spare 09-plated Optare Solos. However, in August 2023, the service underwent a major overhaul and was re-extended to Mansfield (on weekdays only). Consequently, the PVR returned to 3 buses. Furthermore, max-length Optare Versas and Enviro 200 MMCs were utilised on the service to provide extra capacity for the West Nottinghamshire College students. Now, let's focus on the extraordinary 462. It's amazing how some of the newer Optare products in the Trent Barton fleet felt more worn than this elderly Solo. I hardly got the impression that this was the oldest vehicle in the Wellglade fleet. The engine and gearbox sounds are fantastic, the ride quality is decent (harsher than a newer Solo, but that's to be expected) and there's still enough performance to tackle this cross-county route. Overall, a lovely bus route with some fantastic scenery. That, accompanied by a really enjoyable ride on a classic Solo. What more could I ask for?!
