http://www.copdas.com/ A first-ever public webinar involving a partnership between a patient-centred, non-profit organization + two Global Lung Health initiatives + three Specialist Medical Doctors based in Singapore. Supported by an unrestricted educational grant from the industry. This webinar aims to confront the deadly duo in respiratory medicine – Lung Cancer and COPD by raising public awareness through state-of-the-art health education on these two common and lethal lung diseases. A total of 1828 registrants via ZOOM meeting received useful insights provided by our panel of medical specialists. Lung cancer – the commonest and deadliest of all cancers. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, killing 3 million people each year. Even for this year, historically different due to the pandemic, COPD still claims more lives than respiratory tract infections (including those caused by COVID-19) A “lively” online Q&A session with our participants attracted more than 80 questions Some key points highlighted in this livestream webinar: 1. The reason why lung cancer diagnosed only in late stages is that we do not have population based screening guidelines for lung cancer as we have for breast cancer, cervical cancer, or colon cancer. 2. Most of the time when lung cancer gets diagnosed at an early stage, it only gets diagnosed by chance or luck when patient goes for check up for something else. 3. The USA has lung cancer screening guidelines which unfortunately cannot be adopted by Asian countries. This is because we would miss half of the patients if we used these guidelines as more of the lung cancer patients are younger and non-smokers in Asian countries compared the west. 4. There are two basic ways to diagnose lung cancer. These are CT scan and biopsy. 5. Chest X-Ray is not a reliable method to diagnose lung cancer. A CT scan is needed always. 6. Women are at a higher risk of getting lung cancer than men in Asian countries. One of the reasons for this is their susceptibility. The estrogen hormone impedes the ability to repair the damaged DNA in women. 7. Smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer. It is being recognized that lung cancer is rising in non-smokers. Forty percent of lung cancer patients in the Asian countries including Singapore are never smokers.
