Israeli Occupation Forces Kill Palestinian Football Player in Nablus

As the world is still swept up in the world cup fever, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian football player during a military raid in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, on Thursday, December 22. Ahmad Atef Mustafa Daraghma, a 23-year-old resident of the northern West Bank city of Tubas, died from very serious wounds resulting from Israeli army gunfire. Daraghma, a professional player with the Thaqafi Tulkarem football team, was hit by live rounds in the back and feet. Throughout the years, arrests, torture and killings of Palestinian footballers became a regular headline in Palestine. This includes the killing of former Palestinian football star, Ahed Zaqqut, in 2014, and the deliberate shooting of the feet of Jawhar Nasser Jawhar, 19, and Adam Abd Al Raouf Halabiya, 17. The two players were attempting to cross an Israeli military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank to return home after a long training session. Several athletes and football players were also killed or injured during the Great March of Return, a series of demonstrations held each Friday at the fence separating besieged Gaza from Israel, from March 2018 to March 2020.
