This is an easy & basic service to replace spark plugs on a 986 Boxster along with the coil packs to ensure your Boxster is "firing on all cylinders" :) You certainly don't have to replace the coil packs with a Boxster spark plug replacement, I'm just showing the process because you have to remove the coil packs regardless to get to the spark plugs so there is no additional labor or time involved. I replaced our Boxster's coil packs because they were almost 22 years old! A few of them were also getting some hairline cracks in them. If you ever notice after driving your car in the rain, it develops a misfire, that is a good indication you have an ignition coil/s that are cracked and allowing water in. If the misfire persists or is bad enough, chances are you will also get a check engine light indicating a misfire code has been set. Worn out or deteriorated boots on the coil packs will also cause misfires as water can get past the coil pack seals and migrate to the spark plug. Changing the spark plugs &/or ignition coils on your Boxster is an easy DIY maintenance project; but you have to be comfortable jacking your Boxster up to access them from under the vehicle.
