Nowhere to hide - a deadly day's seabird watching

Saturday 14 August 2021; 35 birders boarded the Alison Maree for a day's seabird watching on the edge of the continental shelf 1.5 hours sailing from the Augusta marina. As we approached the edge, distant splashes with dark bodies in the air had crew and birders alike asking "could this possibly be killer whales"? This was an historic discovery for the Naturaliste Charters team, not only documenting the first major congregation of killer whales off the south-western coast of WA but anticipating from unique fin and patch characteristics of at least two individuals known from the Bremer Canyon. Might that population seasonally move westward to pick up young Humpbacks as they travel south in spring? No doubt this wil not be the last time the Alison Maree ventures out to the edge off Augusta. Expect a queue for passenger seats when they do.
