The Future of Integrative Oncology, Dr. Andrew Weil

Donald I. Abrams, MD, Lectureship in Integrative Oncology Andrew Weil, MD, is a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, a healing-oriented approach to health care which encompasses body, mind, and spirit. Dr. Weil is the founder and director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he also holds the Lovell-Jones Endowed Chair in Integrative Rheumatology, and is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health. Through its Fellowship and Integrative Medicine in Residency curricula, the Center is now training doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners around the world. Graduates serve as directors of integrative medicine programs throughout the United States. Dr. Weil earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School and completed a medical internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco. He then worked at the National Institute of Mental Health and authored The Natural Mind, the first of fifteen books, many of which are national and international best-sellers. In this lecture, Dr. Weil will discuss the future of integrative oncology. Integrative oncology is not an alternative cancer treatment, but rather, uses all available methods: 1) to reduce toxicity and increase the efficacy of conventional cancer therapies; 2) to improve the quality of life of persons with cancer; and 3) to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. The demand for integrative oncology is high, but the availability of practitioners is limited. The future of integrative oncology requires incorporating integrative medicine training into oncology fellowships to train the next generation of providers. Consistent with the general philosophy of integrative medicine, this training should also emphasize prevention, especially regarding lifestyle factors that impact cancer risk, such as dietary patterns and environmental toxicity.
