2022 KTM 250SXF Factory Edition and 2021 KTM 350XCF Kailub Russell Factory Edition comparison time! Rode both bikes back to back on this old school GP track and did a lap time comparison too (250FE won). Back to back rides can make the different characteristics of each bike stand out. Is the '22 KTM 250 Factory Edition good enough to knock of my all time favorite combination of power/weight/handling...the KTM/Husky 350? From a lap time point of view - Yes! I did a 2:07.1 lap on the KTM 350 and a 2:06.0 lap on the 250FE so the new 250FE wins by a small 1.1 second margin. First time my '21 KTM KR350 has lost one of these back to back lap time comparisons. From a power point of view - the KTM 350 has a 100cc advantage so it has more power overall and noticeably more engine vibration and engine braking (even with engine braking turned down with the myKTM engine mapping). The much improved '22 KTM 250FE engine finally has lively low to mid response leading to a strong (and fun!) mid range and the usual KTM top end power with less engine braking and less engine vibration compared to past KTM 250SXF engines. This all new 250FE engine is strong and thanks to less inertia and engine braking more "fun" to ride than the current 350. If the all new 350 SXF/XCF engine has improvements similar to the 22 250FE the '23 350SXF/XCF is going to be a very good engine. From a weight point of view: The 2022 KTM 250 Factory Edition is 228 lbs before gas (according to Dirt Bike magazine) and that is about 9 lbs heavier than the '22 250SXF. Probably about half the weight gain is the new chassis/plastic/engine and the other half is Factory Edition parts (seat/skid plate/front rotor guard/wheels). Even with the extra weight the lower engine inertia along with less engine braking makes the 250FE "feel" much lighter in motion than the 350. From a handling point of view: Both bikes have excellent cornering. The current chassis on the 350 feels lighter and more lively up front and not as stable at speed in the choppy stuff. The new chassis on the 250FE is a little more weighty up front with a more planted and less busy feel at speed in the choppy stuff. The updated AER forks and rear shock setting on the 250FE have a more damped feel with less fore/aft braking and acceleration chassis movement. I use the myKTM app chassis section to come up with different settings to try on the AER forks and shock (I use the 22 250SXF as the base bike since there is not 22 250FE option yet in the app). The KR350 has WP Pro components suspension which is an unfair comparison to the stock 250FE suspension components but as I noted in other 250FE rides the WP AER forks are very tunable and can be made to work well with some time and effort to dial in settings. The Pro Components on the KR350 are impressive with plush and well controlled motion on the little bumps and ramp up quickly for bigger inputs and excellent bottoming resistance. Ergonomically the all new plastic including the footpegs on the 250FE give excellent rider contact with the sides of the bike and the new seat is very comfortable with a flatter top. The 250FE gives me the sense of slight bigger layout though I am not sure KTM made any changes to the seat/footpeg/handlebar relationship. Final Thoughts.... The KR350 has been my favorite combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke dirt bike. Lightweight with quick and agile handling which can be a little lively at speed. Strong broad power that pulls over a broad RPM range. The 350XCF is a great do it all bike. The new 250FE is the first KTM 250 engine works so well it got me thinking about if the 350 is still my favorite overall bike. I really like the new chassis. It is not night and day better/worse than current but the more time I spend on it (4 hours so far) the more I like the overall characteristics and feel of the new chassis. The new plastic and ergo's feel great too. Looking forward to more 250/350 back to back rides to soon! My 22 250FE Back to Back ride at Grear MX...... • 22.5 KTM 250 Factory Edition vs 22 CR...
