In this episode of Sword and Siege: Crusades Book II, we fight the Battle of Aintab (August 12, 1150) — a desperate escort mission set between the Second and Third Crusades. After the fall of Edessa in 1144, Christians remaining in the region lived under constant threat. By 1150, King Baldwin III arranged for survivors to be escorted south toward safety in the Principality of Antioch. With roughly 500 knights and supporting infantry, Baldwin began the journey toward Aintab. But Nur ad-Din Zengi had other plans. With over 6,000 Seljuk troops — primarily mounted archers — the Anti-Crusader Alliance surrounded the column and began showering the refugees with arrows. This scenario is uniquely tense: No victory points for killing enemy units No points for exiting your own troops The ONLY way to win is to safely escort the Christian refugees off the southern edge of the map As the Crusader commander, I must hold off waves of mounted archers, protect the vulnerable column, and carve a path to exit the map before the Seljuks can destroy the fleeing civilians. This isn’t about annihilation. It’s about survival.
