This time our quiet walking tour will be taking us around the peaceful fields and lanes in the secluded areas of Matley and Godley, in Tameside, Manchester. I decided to visit this spot a bit last minute, purely because I knew it would be a calming, warm evening here. There only ever tends to be one or two people around at the busiest of times, so I thought I'd give it a try for a nice easy wander around the open fields and tree-enclosed lanes. Starting just beneath Godley reservoir on Mottram Road, we wander up Waterworks Lane (suitable name). At the top there are a couple of old houses/farms. This takes us to the footbridge over the M67 motorway to the Matley side of the walk. I couldn't honestly tell you where Godley ends and Matley begins in these fields, I'm sure there was an official border here before they plonked the motorway through it, but now it seems almost as though the motorway is the border. Along here we get exactly what we came for, in abundance. Wide open fields, separated by hedgerows. There are panoramic views looking over towards Manchester, Werneth Low, Coombes Rocks, Hobson Moor and Harrop Edge. We can wander along these dusty tracks in any way we fancy, but I'll take us to the foot of Harrop Edge and have a gander a few horses and the looming hills. Then we'll square off the fields, up toward Matley Lane. There we can look at the few old cottages here and follow the lanes back towards where we came from. Eventually we can leave the route just before completing a loop, and that will take us around the outside of Godley Reservoir. Following this around brings us to the village of Godley itself. I'm familiar with a few shortcuts here to nip through the winding roads and reach Sheffield Road, which then leads us back to Mottram Road, and back to where we began.
