Elvis Presley Fans! Come join us as we go visit Johnnie’s Drive-In, the Elvis Homecoming Statue, Tupelo Hardware store and Elvis’s Elementary School in Tupelo, Mississippi. Hello Everyone, We hope you are doing well. Today we present to you another video in our series of videos about the Life of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Aaron Presley! In today's video, we are visiting Johnnie’s Drive-In to get an Elvis dough-burger and RC Cola. Going to Tupelo Hardware to see where Elvis’ mother Gladys bought Elvis his first guitar. We even held the hands of Elvis at the Elvis Homecoming Statue, located at the Tupelo Fair-park. We also payed visit Elvis’ elementary school on lake street. This was a very surreal experience for us Elvis fans and we would not trade it for the world! More info below on the places we visited in Tupelo, Mississippi. Johnnie’s Drive-In. Tupelo, Mississippi’s Oldest Restaurant where Elvis Presley ate as a kid. Come visit the Elvis boothe with us and have an Elvis Doughburger. This is Tupelo’s oldest restaurant, opened in 1945. Tons of photos and clippings cover the walls showing history of the restaurant, Tupelo, and Elvis himself, including a photo of Elvis sitting in a Johnnie’s booth. This booth has been appropriately named the “Elvis Booth” and is the most popular seat in the house! Remember when you go. It is a vintage cash-only diner. What is a doughburger? The doughburgers (which is a mix of flour and ground beef to make the patty) served simply with mustard, pickles, and onions on a bun. TUPELO HARDWARE COMPANY : Where Gladys bought her son his first guitar! Website info: https://www.tupelohardware.com As the story is recorded in Forrest L. Bobo’s letter dated October 2, 1979, Gladys Presley brought her son, Elvis, to Tupelo Hardware in January 1946 to buy him a birthday present. According to Mr. Bobo, Elvis would have preferred a rifle, but his mother succeeded in buying a guitar instead. The boy strummed the new guitar for a while, before his mother paid $7.75 and a 2% sales tax. The rest is history! All Elvis fans are welcome to visit during our normal business hours. Visiting Elvis’s elementary school: Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported Friday the rock 'n' roll king was a student at Lawhon Elementary School during the early 1940s. East Tupelo Consolidated School: The stage at Lawhon was one of the first stages Presley ever sang on. Presley attended Lawhon, which was then called East Tupelo Consolidated School, in the early 1940s until fifth grade. The Elvis Homecoming Statue : More on Elvis “Homecoming” statue: Location:Fairpark District (Historic Downtown Tupelo) Tupelo, MS 38804 This is one of 14 significant sites in Elvis' formative years in Tupelo marked with plaques on the Elvis' Tupelo Driving Tour. This larger-than-life statue of Elvis' 1956 Homecoming Concert at the Tupelo Fairgrounds was based on a famous shot called "the Hands" by Roger Marshutz. The statue was placed by the Tupelo Elvis Fan Club and the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau in August of 2012 to commemorate Tupelo's most famous native son. Facing east toward his Tupelo birthplace, the statue is poised for a perfect photo op with Tupelo City Hall standing behind his right shoulder and Tupelo Hardware visible over his left shoulder. The statue stands on the site of the old fairgrounds where the concert took place and was created by Mississippi sculptor Bill Beckwith.
