Research into attrition of rape cases within the criminal justice system has principally focused on cases involving female victims. However, since the legal recognition of male rape in 1994, and in the context of increasing research highlighting the traumatic outcomes of male rape, researchers have begun to explore the experiences of men in more detail. Such endeavours are crucial, as, whilst many aspects of victim-survivor experience are similar across different demographic groups, unique challenges for male victim-survivors, for example the influence of gender-role stereotypes and beliefs surrounding sexuality, have been identified. The study outlined in this talk provides some preliminary information on the details and case trajectories of cases of rape involving a male victim reported in London between 2005 and 2012. From the data presented, victim, suspect and crime typologies are proposed, and the influence of case characteristics on outcome within the criminal justice system are explored.
