A Christmas Carol Lyrics by Walter Zenko Verse 1 In winter night so calm and still, All earth lies hushed in silent awe. The stars proclaim God’s holy will, As heaven bends to what it saw. Chorus 1 O light born in the darkened land, No shadow stands where You draw near. The night is held by God’s own hand, For Jesus Christ is born our King. Verse 2 Before the icons, dark with age, We light the lamps of oil and flame. Saint Nicholas and Sergius gaze, Their faithful eyes still speak His name. Chorus 2 O holy light in quiet glow, Before the saints who watch and pray. Through painted truth, the faithful know, The Word has come to dwell this day. Verse 3 The iconostasis stands in light, A veil where heaven meets the earth. Beyond its doors, in mystery, Is sung the wonder of His birth. Chorus 3 O threshold bright with sacred fire, Where time and eternity meet. The timeless Word takes human breath, And rests at Mary’s humble feet. Verse 4 The censer swings, the incense climbs, Its fragrance fills the candle air. Through midnight vigil, psalms arise, As prayer is borne on breath and care. Chorus 4 Let scent and sound and candle flame, Bear witness to the unseen grace. For God has entered human frame, And hallows all the human race. Verse 5 The Virgin Mary bows in awe, She keeps these wonders in her heart. No royal robe, no earthly throne, Yet heaven’s work is set to start. Chorus 5 O Virgin Mother, strong and mild, You cradle God in human form. Through you is born the holy Child, Who shelters us from sin and storm. Verse 6 The shepherds come with silent feet, Their breath like smoke in frozen air. They kneel before the manger low, And trace the cross in humble prayer. Chorus 6 Bow down, O soul, make low your pride, As earth receives her newborn Lord. For God lies wrapped in swaddling cloth, The Lamb made flesh, the living Word. Verse 7 Old men stand bowed with weathered hands, Young children press their faces near. Scarved women whisper ancient chants, As faith is passed from year to year. Chorus 7 O Christ, be born in what we do, As icons live in flesh and breath. Let lives made bright by holy truth, Proclaim Your life stronger than death. Verse 8 When candles dim and chants grow still, The icon’s gaze remains our guide. For what was shown by God’s own will, Is love made flesh, not set aside. Chorus 8 All glory to the Eternal Light, All praise to God who came so near. In Jesus Christ, the Child displayed, Heaven and earth are joined in peace.
