Wide smoking van STORYLINE: Angry smokers gathered in Frankfurt's main old square on Saturday to protest against a smoking ban which took effect in Lower Saxony on October 1. The protest was organised by the Initiative of Gastronomes Against the No Smoking Law who say the smoking ban has scared away the majority of their customers. "We (have) all run establishments for many years and estimate that about 95 percent of our clients are smokers and we don't accept having to send these people on the street," said Luzie Hartel, founder of the Initiative of Gastronomes Against the No Smoking Law. If the law is not changed they said they will take their case to Germany's Constitutional Court. Smoking in larger establishments is permitted, but has to be confined to closed off smoking spaces. One bar owner pitched a tent, and opened his camper van outside to cater for his smoking customers. "We are trying to do something. I have put up a tent, I parked my camper van outside to give smokers a chance to have a cigarette after dinner or during a discussion," said Heinz Sinovic. Sinovic said some of his customers now visit his bar less regularly. One former regular customer said he now chose to stay at home, where he could smoke whenever he pleases. "Usually I am a regular: three-four times a week meeting all my friends here, but now I stay at home more often enjoying television in the evening where I can smoke when I wish," the smoker said.
