NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Hanna-Barbera 490) Legendary voice actor, Paul Frees, scales the 'Wall of Sound' on this obscure release issued in July 1966 on the Hanna-Barbera label. Frees, who began his radio career in 1942, would over the next forty years be featured in over 250 films, cartoons and TV appearances. As was the case for many voice actors of the time, many of his appearances were often uncredited. While he is most remembered by the characters which he provided the voices for with Walt Disney productions, Rankin/Bass and Jay Ward Productions, Paul Frees managed to put his voice to recording tape on more than one occasion which found its way to being pressed onto vinyl records. Several of his recordings he also composed as is the case with this stunningly atmospheric example. Recorded at Hollywood's Gold Star Recording Studios on June 15, 1966, Paul Frees sort of does a bit of both narrating and singing on 'Portrait Of A Fool'. Clocking in at over three minutes long, the recording is given a larger than life, Spectoresque arrangement courtesy of Don Ralke. Engineered by Stan Ross, the huge backing track was performed by an ensemble of L.A's 'Wrecking Crew' and is completely awash in the intoxicating and magical Gold Star echo.
