Hellenistic astrology represents the original tradition and foundation of Western horoscopic astrology. Flourishing in the Mediterranean region between the first century BCE and the seventh century CE, this system was born from a brilliant synthesising of Mesopotamian celestial omens and Egyptian diurnal rotation techniques. This video overview explores the history, philosophy, and technical building blocks of this ancient practice, focusing on its unique ability to map out an individual’s fate and external life circumstances. We examine the fourfold system that still characterises Western astrology today: the seven wandering stars, the twelve signs of the zodiac, the five configurations, and the twelve places. Viewers will learn about the primary importance of the Ascendant, or Hour-Marker, and the nearly universal use of the Whole Sign House system in antiquity. A key highlight is the exploration of sect, which establishes whether a chart is diurnal or nocturnal, a factor that fundamentally changes how benefic and malefic planets behave. The overview also introduces the legendary figures whose pseudonymous works defined the tradition, such as Hermes Trismegistus, Nechepso, and Petosiris, as well as the practical manuals of Vettius Valens and Claudius Ptolemy. We discuss the philosophical climate of the Roman Empire, where practitioners acted as soldiers of fate, using timing techniques like Annual Profections and Zodiacal Releasing to uncover the narrative arc of a human life. By looking back at these original foundations, we find a sophisticated language of the heavens that remains just as compelling today as it was two thousand years ago. BIBLIOGRAPHY Brennan, Chris.
