Smuggling the Tin, is a song from Liam Weldons 1976 album ‘Dark Horse on the Wind’. Liam would have collected this song from some of the traveling community in the 60s or 70s, he was known to have a great interest in the songs of the Irish travellers and some of his best songs are written about the lives and struggles of the travelling people. Smuggling the Tin is about a few gypsy boys smugglin’ tin across the border from northern Ireland into the South, the smugglers in question were nearly caught by an auld copper but fortunately they managed to get away. the original way Liam Weldon plays on the album is just his voice and a bodhran and it has a great feel to it, link below; • Smuggling The Tin lyrics bellow: Smuggling The Tin Young Cooney and Colley And ould Martin Quinn Well they made up together To smuggle the tin With me right toorin-arinan Right toorin-arinan Right toorin-anay They walked all the day boys Till the heels they grew raw Well they hadn't the comfort Of lying in the straw With me right toorin-arinan Right toorin-arinan Right toorin-anay I'll yoke her says Colley I'm wise to her tricks But the more that he yoked her The more the mare kicked The hills they are high boys Th' oul' mare she is thin And my hеart lies a-trembling For fear shе'll give in I once had a piebald All covered in dots And it's many's the fiver She's won in the trots Up came th' oul' sergeant With a laugh and a grin I'll have ye inside boys For the smuggling of tin Up came th' oul' sergeant With a laugh and a smile I'll have ye inside boys For smuggling a while Young Cooney stood up boys To make the excuse If you leave us all go sir It's home we will scoot We crossed back the border We blessed our ould face To hell with the black North We're in the Free-State With me right toorin-arinan Right toorin-arinan Right toorin-anay
