Arundina graminifolia is commonly known as the Bamboo Orchid due to the bamboo-like appearance of its tall stems and grassy leaves. It is a fast growing, clump-forming plant that occurs naturally across a wide range of Asian countries in all tropical and sub-tropical regions. It shows some degree of variation in the colour form according to its locality. This plant is extremely adaptable and can be grown at sea level as well as altitude provided the temperature is above freezing. Highland plants grow to a height of 2m and bear very large flowers, comparable with Sobralias and Cattleyas in flower size. Plants grown close to sea level in high temperatures will grow much shorter and will have smaller flowers of 6-9cm. The plants in this video were smaller growing plants grown in high temperatures. Arundina is well suited to growing in frost-free gardens in full sun and also in conservatories or greenhouses, again in direct sunlight in cool climates.
