Waves, Wind and Dense Fog Vs the World’s Largest Freshwater Ship in the Duluth Canal

Tregurtha taking on the Elements in the Canal again, and again it’s absolutely no contest. Strong winds off Lake Superior weren’t enough to clear the fog that’s been blanketing the city for the last two days, but were enough to kick up the lake about 6ft or so at times in the Canal! The combination made for a spectacular sight and the first dramatic departure of the fall season. Hopefully will get some more, so long as it’s the fun sort of waves like this rather than actually dangerous, granted having the various conditions together probably wasn’t a walk in the park! Measuring 1,014ft long, 105ft wide with a carrying capacity of 71,000 tons of cargo, the Treguartha is the Queen of the Lakes, the largest of the lakers by physical size and one of the largest freighters in the world when built. Constructed in 1981 as the final swan song of the American Shipbuilding Company of Loraine OH, she’s held that title longer than any other vessel in history and will for the foreseeable future. She was originally named William J DeLancy from 1981-1990, earning her the nickname Fancy DeLancy for her luxurious accommodations, on par with liners and cruise ships of the day. In 2012 the ship ran aground in the St Mary’s River south of Sault Ste Marie, then in 2014 she famously ran aground in Bayfront Park right off the Canal here in Duluth after taking the turn to exit too wide. In 2018 she had a small fire due to a faulty electrical generator which was extinguished without further damage. She has received heavy maintenance over the last two years with her ballast tanks lining the entire sides of the ship being replaced in winter 2024 and a refit, hull inspection and repaint over 2025’s winter offseason. She is a regular visitor to Duluth, making weekly coal and occational iron ore runs between here and Detroit MI. Enjoy!
