Man shot and killed in shootout with police after pursuit, Lemon Grove

LEMON GROVE - August 24, 2017 On August 24, 2017 at approximately 1:20 a.m. a La Mesa Police Officer was on patrol at the intersection of Fletcher Parkway and Baltimore Drive in the city of La Mesa when they spotted a gray Ford sedan. The car was stopped at a green light and a door was open. When the officer approached to investigate, they heard a scream and saw the door slam shut. The car sped off and the officer gave chase. The pursuit continued through the city of La Mesa and into the community of Spring Valley. Shortly after entering into Spring Valley, a Sheriff's sergeant joined into the pursuit in order to assist with the apprehension of the suspect. The pursuit continued through Spring Valley and into the city of Lemon Grove. The suspect's car eventually came to a stop in the 2100 block of Rebecca Way in Lemon Grove and three males ran from the car. Law enforcement officers on scene saw one of the males jump over a fence and then heard what sounded like gunshots. A short time later they spotted the male on a hillside behind a home, a short distance from the abandoned car. A San Diego Police K-9 officer arrived on scene and released his dog. The K-9 made contact with the male. While engaged with the K-9, the suspect fired multiple rounds from a handgun at the law enforcement officers. Four law enforcement officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene and found to be in possession of a handgun. Law enforcement continued to search the area for the remaining two males that fled from the car. One male was located and detained approximately 1 block away. The third male, described as either a black or Middle Eastern and wearing a white shirt, has not been located. Of the four law enforcement officers involved in the shooting, two are from the La Mesa Police Department, one from the San Diego Police Department and one from the San Diego Sheriff's Department. This event is being investigated by detectives from the Sheriff's Homicide Detail.
