Most genealogists start Swedish research in parish records — and that's a mistake. Not because parish records aren't important, but because they're only one layer of a much deeper system. In this presentation, I walk through the institutional framework behind Swedish genealogical records: why they were created, who created them, and what that means for your research strategy. Understanding this framework is the difference between searching databases and actually knowing where to look — and why. We cover seven interconnected record systems spanning from medieval feudal levies through the 1686 Church Law and beyond, including sources that predate parish records by over a century. What you'll learn: — Why the 1686 Church Law created Sweden's parish record system (and why compliance varied dramatically by region) — Husförhörslängder: why Sweden's household examination records are unlike anything else in Europe — The taxation records that predate parish records by 100+ years (mantalslängder, jordeböcker, Älvsborg ransoms) — How land tenure categories (skatte, krono, frälse) determine your entire archival strategy — Two upheavals that reshuffled Swedish land ownership — which may have moved your ancestor's paper trail to a completely different archive — Court records: an underutilized gold mine, and why ArkivDigital's new indexes change everything — Where these records are now and how to access them (most key databases are FREE) This is Module 0 in my Professional Genealogy Methodology Series — the foundational module on which everything else builds. Module 1 covers Swedish history (wars, unions, and territorial changes) and how these events shaped the survival of records.
