[Introduction] Shinsekai (meaning “New World”) is one of Osaka’s most unique and nostalgic neighborhoods, famous for its old-school atmosphere, local street food, and iconic tower views. Developed in the early 1900s, the area was inspired by Paris (for the northern side) and Coney Island in New York (for the southern side). Today, it feels like stepping back into Japan’s postwar Showa era. At the center stands Tsutenkaku Tower, Shinsekai’s symbol. The tower’s name means “Tower Reaching Heaven,” and it offers an observation deck with views of Osaka. Inside, visitors meet Billiken, the “God of Things As They Ought to Be.” Rubbing the soles of Billiken’s feet is said to bring good luck. Shinsekai is also legendary for its food. The area is the birthplace of kushikatsu — deep-fried skewers of meat, seafood, and vegetables. Remember the local rule: “No double dipping” in the shared sauce! The streets are packed with bright signs, retro game arcades, and casual eateries that feel unchanged for decades. Right next door is Tennoji Zoo and Tennoji Park, giving the district a surprising mix of urban energy and green space. By day, Shinsekai feels quirky and nostalgic; by night, the neon lights and glowing tower create a cinematic, old-Japan vibe. Shinsekai isn’t polished or fancy — and that’s exactly its charm. It’s where you experience real, down-to-earth Osaka culture, full of humor, flavor, and history.
