Return of the Jedi isn’t just another Star Wars movie for Tara — it’s her favorite, and it also happens to be the very first movie she ever saw in a theater, when she was about four or five years old. So for her, this isn’t just nostalgia. This is foundational cinema memory. Big screen, giant space battle, weird little forest creatures — that stuff imprints on you. And speaking of those weird little forest creatures… Tara loves the Ewoks with her whole soul. No irony, no apology. Full commitment. Now, I know the Ewoks are the dividing line for a lot of fans. Some people think they soften the movie or make it feel a little too toy-friendly after the darker tone of Empire. But here’s the thing: the Endor battle still works. The traps, the chaos, the sheer underdog energy of a bunch of tiny woodland rebels taking on the Empire — it’s fun, it’s energetic, and it fits the fairy-tale side of Star Wars. For me, the real magic of Jedi is the structure. You’ve got three stories unfolding at once — the ground assault on Endor, the massive fleet battle in space, and the throne room confrontation between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor. The movie keeps cutting between them, building pressure in all three directions until everything collides at once. That cross-cutting is some of the best editing in the whole saga. And the throne room is where the movie earns its place in the trilogy. Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor is pure manipulative evil — calm, theatrical, and completely in control. He’s not trying to defeat Luke physically; he’s trying to break him emotionally. Mark Hamill brings a lot more gravity to Luke this time around too. He’s calm, controlled, almost monk-like compared to the impatient kid from the first two films. And of course, the entire movie is building to Vader’s redemption. That moment still lands. Vader watching the Emperor torture Luke, realizing what he’s done, and finally choosing his son over the darkness — that’s the emotional core of the whole trilogy. Now, we’ll say this: we’re not fans of the Special Edition changes. Some of those updates just feel unnecessary, and a few of them mess with the original tone in ways that don’t help the film. But Tara has a theory about one of the more controversial ones — the young Anakin Force ghost at the end — that I actually think is pretty rad. Her idea is that only Jedi become Force ghosts, and when Anakin redeems himself by saving Luke and destroying the Emperor, his spirit returns to the form he had when he was last truly a Jedi… before Vader. So what we’re seeing isn’t Vader redeemed into an old man — it’s Anakin restored to the last version of himself that was still part of the light side. And honestly? I kind of love that interpretation. Return of the Jedi isn’t as tight or as dark as Empire, which is still my personal favorite. But as a finale, it delivers where it counts. It closes the emotional loop, gives the characters a real ending, and reminds you what the story was about in the first place. Hope. Redemption. Family. And apparently, a small army of teddy-bear commandos. BUY A HAT OR A SHIRT OR ALL KINDS OF OTHER STUFF! https://my-store-f33989.creator-sprin...
