In addition she is the first modern pluralistic rabbi in Italy where she serves congregation Ner Tamid del Sud, The Eternal Light of the South, the first active synagogue in Calabria in 500 years since Inquisition times and the first recognized Reconstructionist synagogue in Italy. The synagogue is “pluralistic,” in that the approach is egalitarian and services and membership are open to Jews of all backgrounds, including interfaith families, non- traditional families and Italians who are discovering and connecting with their lost Jewish roots. These “bnei anusim” families (meaning those whose Jewish ancestors were forced into Christian conversion) represent the focus of Rabbi Barbara’s work in the south of Italy where she has lived and worked in the village of Serrastretta, in Calabria, for nearly 20 years. Rabbi Barbara is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she received the Distinguished Alumni Award. She holds a MS from The George Washington University in Washington DC and received “sm’icha” (rabbinic ordination) from The Rabbinical Seminary International and the Rabbinical Academy in New York City. She has won several awards, among them Washingtonian of the Year, and the Surgeon General’s Medallion for Excellence in Public Health from Dr. C. Everett Koop. Rabbi Barbara is a Blogger for Times of Israel and a syndicated guest columnist for the Jewish News publications in southwest Florida, where she writes a monthly column on Aging Jewishly. In her previous life, before becoming a rabbi, she was founder and director of The Kids on the Block puppet program used around the world to teach children and adults to accept and appreciate difference and diversity and is an award-winning author of a children’s book series based upon her characters. For 15 years Rabbi Barbara hosted the Radio Rabbi program, broadcast live every Sunday morning on AM 930 The Answer. . The program focuses on Jewish tradition, culture and music and was streamed and podcast around the world. Rabbi Barbara has been a featured speaker on the topic of Italian anusim and has traveled in the United States as a scholar in residence, She was invited to address the National Press Club in Washington, DC and has presented her work at a special committee at the United Nations where she spoke about her Calabrian initiative on religious pluralism.
