An Aeropropulsive Test Problem: Coupling CFD Simulations with a Propulsion Model

Design and integration of propulsion systems will be essential for future sustainable aircraft. In this work, we present a benchmark problem to facilitate future development and collaborations in the field of aeropropulsive design optimization, in which the aerodynamic and propulsion system designs are optimized in a coupled manner. We present several formulations that vary in difficulty, and detail our reference implementation, which is built with NASA’s OpenMDAO framework.
