In august 24 1954, at the brink of a coup, Getúlio Vargas comitted suicide, ending the era knows as "Vargas age" in Brazil. Being accused of a crime he didn't comitt, the life attempt against the right wing journalist Carlos Lacerda, Getúlio Vargas spent five days on a incessant fight to abort the cou, but eventually received a ultimatum asking him to resign or to be removed by force, and noticing that even if he resigned the army still would take power, he concluded that the only way to prevent such a thing would be to bring the end to his own life and in this way cause such a popular reaction that the coup would be aborted. This song is sung by Curió e Canarinho, a brazilian backlands band of the 1960s, 70s and 80s and represents the feeling of sadness and dread after Vargas suicide, something many brazilians still remember over six decades later. Vargas, with all his faults, fought for a Brazil for everyone and his tragic end came through an act he didn't cause, and to prevent a group that wanted to opress the people from doing so, being his final gift for the people he always gave his sweat, tears and blood to save from poverty. Six decades later his message is still very actual, but the light that once shared enlightned the way has been extinguished by the iron swords and rifles of nineteen sixty four.
