Vintage 1962 Westinghouse Escalators @ Sears Westfield West Covina

West Covina, CA. These things are AMAZING! Definitely retro, as you can tell by the pink sides and Westinghouse comb plate. As far as I can tell, they were installed in 1962 when The Broadway opened here. This store became a Sears in 1996. I didn't film the elevator as it was out-of-order. It had flat Innovation Universal call buttons, and either a digital, external lantern above the door and a Innovation Uni PI or a digital and analog PI. Now, for this malls history: Westfield West Covina originally opened as West Covina Plaza in 1962 as a strip mall and was anchored by The Broadway and Desmond's. By the late 1960's-early to mid 1970's, plans were made, started, and finished to make the center into an enclosed mall. This required the demolition of a good part of the center, but the eastern-most part of the strip mall along with The Broadway and Desmond's were saved. Built with 2 shopping levels, a HUGE 3 story parking garage, and 4 anchors (The Broadway, Desmond's(not connected to the mall), JCPenney, and Bullock's), the mall was a success. In the late 1970's, the 2-story Desmond's went out of business and was quickly replaced with a 2-story Tower Records. The 1990's brought along with it a new name, Plaza at West Covina, and a major anchor shake up. In 1992/93 a new wing of the mall was built. Its new anchor was Robinsons-May on the very east side of the mall. In 1996, Federated Dept. Store sold The Broadway building to Sears, and they moved in. They also converted the Bullock's into a Macy's. When Federated bought Robinsons-May and renamed all the stores Macy's, they operated 2 Macy's stores in the mall. In 2007, the former Robinsons-May building was expanded and remodeled. By early 2008, both Macy's stores at the Westfield West Covina were consolidated into the old Robinsons-May store and the original Bullock's store was sold back to Westfield. The store was demolished in favor of a Best Buy, XXI Forever, new shops and a new entrance/exit. Along with this project was a major renovation of the mall's northern exterior, including the addition of new restaurants, a Nordstrom Rack on the 2nd floor, and a Gold's Gym. NOTE: PARTS OF THIS VIDEO HAVE BEEN SILENCED AND/OR SPED-UP DUE TO COPYRIGHT! These escalators run VERY WELL. I'm very happy to see that these have lasted as long as they have! These were installed in 1966 when the mall opened. This is also the last upload for the Inland Center Mall elevators/escalators. Now for some history: This was one of the original buildings that opened with the mall in 1966. This opened originally a Broadway, which is what it was until Macy's (Federated) bought out Broadway, in which case, this building became Macy's. In 2006, May Dept. Stores was bought out by Federated. This Macy's then moved into the newer (1996) Robinson's-May building which also had a parking garage attached via a walkway. This building only remained vacant for about a year, then Mervyn's took it over. The opening was supposed to be in late 2008, but Mervyn's went under, and Forever 21 took over the project. From the outside, you can tell it was a Broadway because all Broadways had a certain look, their own exterior building designs. The building is in good shape and I'm happy to see that it hasn't been sitting vacant, like the Gottschalks on the other side of the mall, or the other Broadway building in Montclair Plaza.
