(10 Sep 2017) Detained migrants at a main detention centre in the Libyan capital Tripoli received medical examinations on Sunday after international pressure was put on officials there to improve conditions and the treatment of detainees. The detention centre's spokesman said the lack of normal housing and medical care was the biggest obstacle to improving the living conditions of detainees. The centre is holding more than 1,000 migrants who live in poor health conditions and with low morale. Henesi, a migrant from South Sudan, said he was able to come to Libya via Egypt, but was arrested by immigration control in Libya and imprisoned before he could migrate to Europe by sea. Henesi also said he was tortured and abused at Mitiga base detention centre in Tripoli before being transported to the city's main shelter. Recent organisation reports said that migrants suffer from poor treatment and lack access to adequate medical care. Bad conditions at the detention centres are directly linked to the majority of the physical and mental health problems for which migrants require medical attention. People are held arbitrarily, with no recourse to challenge the legality of their detention, and with virtually no access to consular services or the outside world.
