In the State of California, relocating wildlife is illegal. Fortunately, coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare. The best course of action is to scare coyotes away: make loud noises, wave your arms, throw some sticks or stones in their general direction. Coyotes are generally afraid of humans to begin with, so it doesn’t take much to scare them off. We recommend you keep your smaller pets indoors whenever they are not under your direct supervision. Also, remove any other potential sources of food and water, including outdoor pet food/water bowls, any fruit that has fallen from trees in your yard, and keep trash containers securely closed. If you see a coyote here in Oxnard, please, do not dial 9-1-1 - or our non-emergency line. If you do feel the need to report a coyote sighting, you can call the United States Department of Agriculture, California Wildlife Services state office at the number here on the screen at: (916)979-2675.
