In this interview on Dartmouth College Radio (WDCR / WebDCR), I discuss my new book Basketball Trafficking: Stolen Black Panamanian Dreams, published by Duke University Press. We talk about a largely hidden issue in global sports: basketball trafficking. Across the world, young athletes travel to the United States chasing opportunities in high school and college basketball. But many arrive through complex and risky pathways involving F-1 student visas, prep schools, recruiters, and immigration systems that can leave them vulnerable. In this conversation, we discuss: • What basketball trafficking is and how it happens • Why international athletes migrate to the U.S. for basketball • How the F-1 student visa shapes the experiences of international players • The risks and power imbalances young athletes face • What families, coaches, and institutions should understand about this system Sports are often seen only as entertainment. But behind the jerseys are young people navigating immigration systems, labor dynamics, and life-changing decisions. This conversation uses basketball as a window into race, migration, education, and global inequality in sport.
