The lyrics of L'alba sepàra dalla luce l'ombra were written by Gabriele D'Annunzio and the music is by Paolo Tosti. A translation of the song is as follows; The dawn divides the darkness from the light, And my sensual pleasure from my desire, O sweet stars, the hour of death is now at hand: A love more holy sweeps you from the skies. Gleaming eyes, O you who'll ne'er return, sad stars, snuff out your uncorrupted light! I must die, I do not want to see the day, For love of my own dream and of the night. Envelop me, O Night in your maternal breast, While the pale earth bathes itself in dew; But let the dawn rise from my blood And from my brief dream the eternal sun. I uploaded a video compilation of the song with just Caruso, Schipa and Bjorling some time ago but, since then, I have improved my restoration system and started colourizing the photos so, as it is one of my all time favourites I have re-done the video and added four more nice recordings. For a change I have put the recordings on in reverse chronological order so that the poor audio quality of the Caruso recording doesn't stand out quite as much and, just for fun, at the very end Caruso is joined by Schipa, Bjorling and Pavarotti to give a short, rousing finale. The recordings on the video are as follows; 0:00 Andrea Bocelli Rec 2002 2:46 Alfredo Kraus Rec 1989 4:58 Luciano Pavarotti Rec "live" 1976 Salzburg 7:25 Mario Lanza Rec 1959 10:21 Jussi Bjorling Rec "live" 1955 Carnegie Hall 12:49 Tito Schipa Rec 1938 14:49 Enrico Caruso Rec 1917 17:07 Caruso, Schipa, Bjorling, Pavarotti (Short Finale)
