Still, the Soviet influence is quite obvious in the music, but in a pleasant surprise, the lyrics are comparatively more distinctly Chinese--with more classical verses and references to traditional Chinese military culture (I' afraid that's something I can't translate), instead of the generic and somewhat hackneyed Soviet socialist totalitarian-style mumble-jumble. Once again from the lyrics you can tell it's one of the newer post-Cultural Revolution creations, and indeed it is--2012. Again it's from our good ol' PLA General Political Department Propaganda Department (总政治部宣传部), as a part of its annual call for new military songs. 755 pieces, from military marches to rock 'n' roll to folk songs, composed and written by personnel across all PLA units, were submitted for the contest. In the end, 60 made it to the final round and were published for online voting, and "Anthem of the Special Forces" was one of them. China's history in military special operations, like those of many other countries, can be traced back all the way to ancient times. But the modern type took its embryonic form during WWII. The professional People's Liberation Army Special Operations Forces (中国人民解放军特种部队, PLASOF for short) that we see today was originally established in the 1980s, as China joined the many other nations in that global spec ops spree. The first of the many PLASOFs, the Guangzhou Military Region Special Operations Force, or simply the "Southern Blade", was formed in 1988. By the 20th century's first decade, China fielded eleven SOF units--the 7 Military Regions each had one directly under its command, the Navy, Air Force, the Second Artillery Corps, and the People's Armed Police each also had one for themselves; all were regiment-level organizations, ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 in personnel. Starting from 2011 the PLA began to reform this structure, and by reform I meant expand. The command was handed down from the Military Region to each Group Army as new formations were raised. Of the 18 Group Armies, only 7 still lack SOF units. Most of the SOF units are also expanded into brigade-level formations, with 3,000 men and women (yes there are women). Despite all the numbers, the PLASOF is, well, not really that famous, especially when compared to its equals like the Army Rangers or the Spetsnaz GRU. This is kind of surprising considering China's position on the global military power chart. But in the end, other than the PLA's tradition of secrecy, I guess the main reason for PLASOF's anonymity is simply because that China, contrary to its portrayal by Western media, is a comparatively peaceful country (when it comes to international quarrels, at least) and we rarely get the chance to see the PLA running around in Third World countries blowing up rebel depots and assassinating army generals...unlike some other countries (no finger-pointing). The PLASOF simply too much chance to shine, and subsequently get famous.
