Gender transformative approaches find entry points for community discussion through religious beliefs and cultural practices that value women’s contributions to the clan, family, community and church. Over 10 years of programming, Pacific Women partners in Papua New Guinea (PNG) trialled, adapted, and evaluated a range of approaches to gender transformation. Through a participatory review of what worked, they identified eight key elements to bringing about change in gender dynamics in PNG and across the Pacific. This 4-minute video features three projects ensuring that the implications of unequal gender relations are made visible and included in community discussions. They facilitate discussions on the values underlying customs and help communities to reconsider how those values can be acted on in the modern context in a way that promotes gender equality. The Family Farm Teams project promotes a family-based approach to smallholder farmers. The UNICEF Parenting for Child Development builds on the protective custom of the dream for each child. The CARE Mamayo project works with communities to break down taboos relating to sexual reproductive and maternal health as well as to build respectful relationships within families. This video is one of a series of six videos featuring partners implementing the 8 key elements of GETA. It is part of a resource package which includes the report What Works for Gender Transformative Approaches in Papua New Guinea, practice note Gender Transformation in Practice: Opening Doors for Lasting Change and videos in English and Tok Pisin summarising the lessons to develop policy, action and practice to drive gender transformative change in development programming. Read the report: https://pacificdata.org/data/dataset/... Read the practice note: https://pacificdata.org/data/dataset/... Pacific Women was one of the largest global commitments to gender equality. Since its beginning in 2012, supported under the PNG-Australia Partnership, the program reached an estimated 1.62 million Papua New Guinean women, men, girls and boys through its 59 partners and 56 projects. Whilst Pacific Women ended on 30 June 2022, the Australian Government’s commitment and support for gender equality in Papua New Guinea will continue through the new PNG Women Lead program. The participatory review of gender transformative approaches benefited from the collective knowledge and experience of 14 Pacific Women partners. We thank all the partners for their commitment to document and share learning about what works to achieve gender transformative change in Papua New Guinea and participation in the review and video.
