Performed by Neoteric Chamber Winds www.neotericwinds.org Program notes: Sept Danses originally began as part of a larger work for Françaix—the 1935 ballet entitled Les malheurs de Sophie (Sophie’s Misfortunes) based on an 1858 children’s book written by the Countess of Ségur. Sophie is a dastardly little girl who lives with her parents, Monsieur and Madame de Réan, in the French countryside during the Second French Empire. Curious and adventurous, Sophie often makes blunders and is rescued by her good-hearted cousin, Paul, who patiently tries to keep her on the right track. Follow Sophie’s journey as she overeats at afternoon tea, holds a funeral for her favorite doll, shaves off her eyebrows, and cuts up, cooks, and devours her mother’s pet goldfish! In the dedication to her granddaughter, Elizabeth Fresneal, the Countess warns, “Dear child, you often say to me, ‘Oh, Grandmother, I love you so! You are so good.’ . . . but Grandmother was not always so good . . . listen well so that you will not have all the flaws of Sophie.”
