Apical dominance | Tree Biology
Apical dominance is the ability of the apical bud to suppress the growth of the lateral buds through a gradient of auxin (one of the plant growth regulators). It refers to a single season of growth. Apical control (not in book) refers to the relationship of the central leader and its branches over the course of multiple years. A tree with strong apical control maintains a central trunk, creating an "excurrent" form. Meanwhile, a tree with weak apical control loses its central leader and has multiple leaders, resulting in a rounded "decurrent" form. Apical control is not directly related to apical dominance. These are genetically controlled but may change with age.
