Marylanders across the state woke up on Monday to a blanket of snow after a nor’easter traveled through the region overnight. Snow is still falling in parts of the Baltimore area. Winds are expected to take over during the day, with gusts as fast as 38 mph, according to the National Weather Service Lingering moisture on untreated sidewalks and roads will likely freeze and could form ice patches. Be careful while driving and walking. Snow started coming down in Ocean City on Sunday evening and continued through the night. The beach town, like much of the Eastern Shore, awoke to a blizzard warning and a coating of snow. The warning is in effect until Monday evening. An entire town on the Eastern Shore, Berlin, lost power, Mayor Zack Tyndall said. According to Delmarva Power, an electric company that serves parts of the Eastern Shore, about 1,000 area residents were affected by outages Monday morning. Several states declared emergencies, including Delaware and Massachusetts, as snow totals crossed one foot in some regions. Airports, courts, and government agencies across DC, Maryland, and Virginia also adjusted schedules. The D.C. area woke up to a fine coating of snow and slush Monday morning. Meanwhile, Snowfall totals have trended upward again for Virginia’s Eastern Shore as a rapidly intensifying coastal storm strengthens offshore Sunday afternoon. The heaviest snow is expected between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., when snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour are possible across Accomack and Northampton counties. Through much of Monday, the major nor'easter will focus its fury on coastal areas of New York and southeastern New England. Farther west, the heaviest snow will diminish in the zone from New Jersey and Delaware to Pennsylvania and Maryland. However, strong coastal winds will continue to create harsh, dangerous conditions and blowing and drifting snow. Airline effects from the coastal storm in the Northeast will ripple throughout the U.S. and to some extent on a global scale due to the volume of domestic and international flights handled by the hubs from Philadelphia and New York City to Boston. As of mid-morning on Monday, there were approximately a dozen and a half official National Weather Service reporting sites that have experienced blizzard conditions in the coastal Northeast thus far, including Boston, Providence, Rhode Island, and Newark, New Jersey. PennDOT and PA Turnpike have lifted all travel restrictions put in place during the winter storm. In Kent and Sussex counties, a Level 3 Driving Ban is in effect. Under such restrictions, only first responders, first informers and essential personnel may drive on state roadways. #blizzard #snowstorm #snow
