As Kunlun was getting ready for Grindr’s stock market initial public offering (IPO), the US Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS) intervened, informing Chinese firm Beijing Kunlun Tech that its ownership of the app constitutes a national security risk. The CFIUS has been increasingly scrutinising app developers over personal data collection. In the past two years, US authorities have ordered the divestment by Chinese bidders of money transfer company MoneyGram and mobile marketing firm AppLovin. Kunlun, one of China’s largest mobile gaming companies, bought Grindr in 2016. It is now looking to sell the networking app for gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. The case is the latest attempt by the Trump administration to tighten control over China’s access to American technology.
